Understanding CMYK Colour Selection

Why CMYK Matters for EN71-3 Certification

CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black) represents the four primary pigment groups used in professional colour reproduction. For EN71-3 toy safety certification, testing representative colours across the CMYK spectrum provides broad, risk-based chemical safety coverage for 3D printing filaments.

The CMYK Approach

In an ideal scenario, representative testing includes colours aligned to the four CMYK pigment groups:

  • Cyan – Blue-green / cool pigment systems
  • Magenta – Red-pink pigment systems
  • Yellow – Bright yellow pigment systems
  • Black (K) – Carbon-based and dark pigments

Testing across these pigment groups provides representative coverage of the primary pigment families commonly used in coloured filaments, supporting EN71-3 due-diligence requirements.

When True CMYK Isn’t Available

Not all manufacturers test their filaments using true CMYK colours. Where this occurs, alternative colours are selected to provide equivalent safety coverage based on pigment chemistry and availability.

Our Selection Criteria

When substituting for CMYK, we prioritise:

  • Pigment diversity and chemical representation
  • Common customer colour usage
  • Coverage from light to dark pigment systems
  • Colours officially tested and certified by the manufacturer

Example: Light Blue, Pink, Yellow, and Black

For materials such as Elegoo PLA+, where standard CMYK testing is not available, we use:

  • Light Blue to represent cyan-spectrum pigments
  • Pink to represent magenta-spectrum pigments
  • Yellow for direct yellow pigment coverage
  • Black for carbon-based pigment systems

This approach delivers representative chemical safety coverage across the colour spectrum, while remaining grounded in the colours actually certified for that material.

Your Safety Assurance

Whether you receive a certificate with standard CMYK or our carefully selected alternative colours, you can be confident that:

  • All colours have been independently tested to EN71.3 standards
  • The selection represents diverse pigment chemistry
  • Documentation is authentic and traceable
  • Safety compliance is verified for toy material applications
